A Case of Otitis Media

Otitis media, inflammation and infection of the middle ear, is common in young children. Its many possible causes, including food allergies and lack of breast-feeding as babies, are outlined and its often ineffective or unnecessary treatment with antibiotics or surgery is highlighted.

The author, who has seen many children with this problem, illustrates the alternative approaches available by presenting a case study of a five-year-old boy, who had suffered from intermittent otitis media for three years and had severe skin and food allergies, disturbed sleep and hearing difficulties.

The author described how a kinesiology test and urine and saliva analyses were performed to identify the causative bacteria, the state of his immune system and liver, and the contributory food and environmental sensitivities.

The diet advised included organic, gluten-free wholefoods which are rich in carotenes; vitamin E, zinc and selenium which act as antioxidants, and zinc and vitamins C and B6 which are also antioxidants but in addition help the production of hormones from the thymus gland, thus assisting the immune system.
